PRESS RELEASE
NEW BOOK ON EVAN, LORD TREDEGAR FROM
NEWPORT AUTHOR WILLIAM CROSS
Sketches of Evan, Viscount Tredegar
‘Lord of the Lies’
This new book on Evan Morgan, Viscount Tredegar was published on 4 December 2017 by Book Midden Publishing on behalf of Newport writer William Cross, Evan Morgan’s biographer, and the author of seven other books featuring the notably eccentric Welsh peer.
It is a compilation of reminiscences of how the last Viscount Tredegar is recalled by regular guests at Tredegar House in the 1930s and 1940s.
Highlights of the Book :
Veteran Newport historian Jim Dyer provides a nostalgic introduction.
There is an article entitled “ The Erosion of the History of the Morgans of Tredegar House, Newport” from the Author/ Editor, William Cross.
The above article reveals surprising facts including :
- The outcome of a ‘Freedom of Information Enquiry’ that shows the real cost to Newportonians in payments made by Newport City Council in leasing Tredegar House since 2012 to the National Trust is already over £9 million pounds, with further very large ongoing payments until 2062.
- That rare Morgan artifacts offered for public sale in the last few years have been lost to Newport relating to the Morgans of Tredegar House Collections.
- Morgan family milestones in 2017 have been missed by the National Trust at Tredegar House.
- That the National Trust at Tredegar House has made no plans for any commemorations of the Morgan family war dead of the Great War, despite a suggestion from a Newportonian about a memorial should be considered.
Facts such as these disclosures inevitably erode Morgan history!
Among those offering 'Sketches' of Evan, Viscount Tredegar in the new book are historian Cyril Hughes Hartmann, novelist Inez Holden, travel writer Robin Bryans, journalists Cyril Roberts and Charles Graves plus tales from the Irish Catholic diplomat, Shane Leslie, his son Desmond ( who was Evan’s godson), The Times Literary Supplement editor, Alan Pryce-Jones & the political commentator and barrister, Henry Maxwell.
The book also appraises Evan Morgan as a poet and as a Parliamentary candidate in London’s East End in the late 1920s.
Author/ Editor William Cross adds
“ This is the first of series of books using unpublished or little known sources to aim to establish accuracy, and truth about Evan Morgan. Evan’s notoriety is misinterpreted, he continues to fascinate, but too many fictitious tales linger on about his legacy. These books reveal how others saw him. Now at last almost 70 years after Evan’s death readers have the chance to discover what these contemporaries actually had to say about their host.”
